David Embaye, 22David Embaye, 22A man suspected in a shots fired call was injured overnight after he fired a handgun at officers who were pursuing him on foot while he fled his vehicle.

Officers responding to a report of gunfire in the area of 37th Street and Elliot Avenue at about 11 p.m. saw a vehicle leaving the area and stopped it at 38th Street and Columbus Avenue. Upon stopping, police say 22-year-old David Tsehai Embaye, of Minneapolis, fled from the passenger fled on foot.

Police say Embaye fired a handgun at the pursuing officers, three officers returned fire and wounded him. Embaye’s handgun was then seized at the scene.

Embaye was taken to Hennepin County Medical Center for treatment.Though Embaye’s condition is not known, police say he is expected to survive.

Police have placed Embaye under arrest at HCMC on probable-cause prohibited person in possession of a firearm.

Acting Minneapolis Police Chief Janne Harteau said, “We are attempting to locate any witnesses that are possibly out there. Right now we don’t have any, but we’re continuing to look.”

The three officers who shot at Embaye have been identified as:

  1. Officer Walter Alvarado, a five-year department veteran
  2. Officer Omar Foulkes, a six-year veteran
  3. Officer Brandon Kitzerow, an 11-year veteran

All are on paid administrative leave following the shooting, which is standard departmental procedure
