A town hall meeting that was planned to be held in Humera town of the Tigray region has been cancelled by municipal authorities. Abrha Desta, a member of the opposition party’s executive team, said the celebration of the ruling TPLF’s 39th Anniversary was given as the reason for the cancellation.

Mr. Abrha told Addis Admas that his party has been rallying support for the town hall meeting, doing door-to-door canvassing and distributing promotion materials in Humera town. He said the city administration officials denied initial requests for permission to hold the town halls in the weekends, but granted permission for Friday.

However, as weeks long event promotion campaigns ended, Humera city officials reversed the decision and “dubbed our gathering as illegal,” Mr. Abrha said. The reason given to the cancellation of the event was the celebration of TPLF’s anniversary, he added.

The town hall in the frontier town aimed at addressing recent boarder issues with neighboring Eritrea and Sudan. Arena party planned to discuss issues of national security and boarder security with residents, according to the opposition party leader. “The ruling party can give numerous reasons for the cancellation, but we know they cancelled it because they abhor our party’s fervent activism,” Mr Abrha said.
